Physical Education and Sport are an integral part of GSG’s educational programme. Active participation provides not only the physical development of individuals, but also intellectual, social and character development. The school’s programme aims to develop school spirit, sportsmanship and self‐discipline and encourages students to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle.
GSG offers a wide variety of sporting opportunities through Summer and Winter sport seasons, Physical Education, Health, Outdoor Education, Interhouse and Interschool competitions.
All students from Kindergarten to Year Ten participate in weekly Physical Education and Health Education classes. All Middle School students participate in two periods of sport each week. Through participation in a broad range of team games and individual performance activities, students develop the physical, self‐management and interpersonal skills needed for confident participation in sport and recreational activities.
Students are offered opportunities to join school teams and participate in local, regional and metropolitan competitions.
Registration fees for participation in sport are included in school fees. In general, all sporting teams have one training session per week (mid‐week) and one game per week.
GSG students enjoy competing in the Great Southern Secondary Schools Sporting Association
and participating in competitions with other Albany-based primary schools. We are well represented in
many community sporting associations. Strong school spirit, along with dedicated and enthusiastic coaching, has resulted in success for teams and extended participation for many students.
Sports which may be on offer at the school include:
House sport is an integral part of the school calendar. Each year we host interhouse swimming, athletics and cross country competitions. Interhouse competition is fostered in Middle and Senior Schools, with additional house competitions taking place during sport lessons.
Carnivals for the following competitions are held between GSG Houses; Baudin, Camfield, Mokare and Wilson. Junior, Middle and Senior School students all participate in these events. Parents are encouraged to attend and volunteer helpers are usually required to assist.
GSG participates in the Great Southern Secondary Schools Sporting Association (GSSSSA) Interschool events where competition in swimming, athletics, cross country and year group-specific sporting events are held.
The Country High Schools' Country Week event is the highlight of the annual sporting programme. Students strive for selection to participate in this week‐long event held in Perth during the last week of Term Two each year.
Students are expected to display exceptional behaviour, cooperate with their coaches and play for their team with a good attitude.
GSG offers a variety of opportunities to participate in sporting tours within Western Australia, Australia and overseas. Students strengthen their capabilities by playing sport in a different environment and against teams they have not played against before. These events depend on team qualification to attend.
School Awards recognise the outstanding contribution, commitment and ability of students where these traits are demonstrated in their involvement with Sport, Music and Community Service within the School. Half Colours, Colours and Honours can be achieved.
Outdoor Education units are available as an elective in Years Eight to Ten. Interested students select Outdoor Education as their choice of elective by nomination.
Curriculum is a balance between adventure and environmental awareness. Adventure activities include:
A term’s work includes planning, preparation and execution of a camp or expedition of two or more days.
The mission of GSG Physical Education is to provide a broad curriculum centred around the development of the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of students, demonstrating the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle that leads to being productive, contributing, happy, balanced citizens of society.
All GSG students participate in the Physical Education programme.
A broad range of subjects are covered in Health Education across campus.
